Geography and climate

Nestled in Central Europe, Austria borders Germany, Switzerland, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Slovenia. Despite being a relatively small country, Austria’s landscapes are incredibly diverse. Austria’s history is deeply intertwined with Europe’s cultural and political evolution. For centuries it was the heart of the Habsburg Empire, one of the most influential dynasties in the world. This legacy left behind grand palaces, operas, and a strong tradition of classical music, famously represented by Mozart, Strauss, and Beethoven.

In the early 20th century, the empire dissolved after World War I, and Austria experienced political instability leading into World War II. After the war, the country regained independence and declared neutrality in 1955, an important element of its identity today.

Modern Austria is democratic, prosperous, and culturally vibrant. Its cities are clean and well-organised, and its history is reflected everywhere, from medieval fortresses to baroque architecture and beautifully preserved old towns.
