Moving to Spain? Here are the visa options you should know about

Considering moving to Spain or planning an extended stay? Spain offers diverse visa options to suit different lifestyles. Visas for expats seeking long-term residency, for travellers looking to explore or for others who wish to work remotely.

However, navigating all the visa options can be a bit complicated. Especially if you're not from Europe. This guide should break down everything you need to know.

Spain travel and visa requirements for Europeans

If you're a European citizen, you're in luck! One of the perks of being from the EU, the European Economic Area (EEA), or Switzerland is the freedom of movement. Which allows you to live, work, and travel within Spain without needing a visa.

What this means for Europeans

  • No visa needed: European citizens can enter Spain with just a valid passport or national ID card.

  • Right to stay indefinitely: If you're planning to live in Spain for more than three months, you'll need to register as a resident and obtain a NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero). This acts as your tax indentification number in Spain.

  • Ease of employment: There are no additional work permits required. You can apply for jobs or start your own business without restrictions.

Visa options for non-Europeans

If you’re not from the EU, EEA, or Switzerland, you’ll need a visa to enter Spain for extended stays or specific purposes. Below are the most common visa types for non-Europeans:

1. Schengen visa (short-stay visa)

  • Who it’s for: Those who want to visit Spain for up to 90 days within a 180-day period as a tourist, business traveller, or for family visits.

  • Time limit: Cannot exceed 90 days in total across all Schengen countries.

  • How to apply: Submit your application at the Spanish consulate in your home country.

2. Non-lucrative visa (residing without work)

  • Who it’s for: Non-Europeans who have sufficient financial resources to live in Spain without working. Ideal for retirees or those taking an extended sabbatical.

  • Requirements:

    • Proof of sufficient financial funds often €28,800 per year plus an additional 7,200 per dependant you bring along.

    • Private health insurance.

    • A clean criminal record.

  • Duration: Initially valid for one year. Renewable for up to five years after which you can apply for permanent residency.

3. Work visa

  • Who it’s for: Workers from outside of the European Union of varying skill levels.

  • Requirements:

    • A job offer from a Spanish company.

    • Approval from the Spanish Ministry of Labour.

  • Process:

    • The employer applies for your work permit on your behalf, and once approved you can apply for the work visa in your home country.

  • Duration: Valid for one year with the ability to renew yearly

4. Digital nomad visa

  • Who it’s for: Remote workers who want to live in Spain while continuing to work for a company based outside the country.

  • Requirements:

    • Demonstrated remote work for a non-Spanish company or clients.

    • Financial stability to support your stay.

  • Duration: Allows for stays of up to 12 months, with possible extensions.

5. Student Visa

  • Who it’s for: Non-Europeans attending a study program at a Spanish educational institution.

  • Requirements:

    • Letter of admission from a Spanish school or university.

    • Proof of financial means and health insurance.

  • Duration: Matches the length of your study course (extendable).

To apply for your visa, you’ll typically need the following (exact requirements may vary by visa type):
