Overview of the Dutch educational system

The Dutch school system is divided into stages.

First, there's primary school or Basisschool, for children aged 4 to 12. This includes eight years of full-time teaching. The first two years are similar to kindergarten, focusing on personal and social growth of the kiddies.

Next is secondary school, which has three categories: VMBO, HAVO, and VWO. The VMBO is a four-year course that prepares students for hands-on training. The HAVO is five years long and gears up students for higher professional learning. Lastly, the VWO, lasting six years, prepares students for university.

At age 18, students may enter higher education, split into two: scientific education at research universities and higher professional education at universities of applied sciences.

If a student decides to not go to the university yet, they may go to a MBO (Middle-Level Applied Education). MBO is divided into four levels, each with different objectives.

These MBO levels offer a comprehensive spectrum of vocational education, addressing the diverse needs of students and ensuring a skilled and flexible workforce for the Dutch economy. Students may apply for a HBO after finishing their MBO level 4 study.

The final stage is University Education, where students can do a Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree. It's worth mentioning that the majority of programmes at Dutch universities are taught in English.
