Relocating to Spain and what to consider in 2025

Are you dreaming of a new chapter under the sunny Spanish skies? If you're looking for a new place to live and work or just a retiree looking for a peaceful haven, Spain will be exactly what you're looking for. The country is home to vibrant cities as well as a rich culture and history.

Relocating to a new country is a big step however and there is a lot to consider. This guide will help you get through the most important bits so you can focus on enjoying the beaches of Spain in all its wonders!

Finding the right moving company

Relocating abroad often starts with finding a reliable moving company to get your belongings to Spain safely and efficiently. Not all moving companies are created equal, so it’s important to choose one that specialises in international moves.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when selecting your moving partner:

  • Experience: Does the company have a track record of successful international relocations?

  • Insurance: Make sure they offer appropriate insurance for your belongings.

  • Reviews: Check for testimonials from other expats or those who’ve relocated abroad.

  • Customs know-how: Choose a company that understands Spain’s customs processes and paperwork.

Many moving companies also offer professional packing services and flexible delivery options, which can take a huge weight off your shoulders. Take your time to research and compare quotes to find a company that meets your needs and budget. Be sure to get 6 free quotes from our own website by using the button down below.

Paperwork and visas

Moving to Spain requires you to handle some paperwork. While the requirements will vary based on your citizenship, visa type, and work situation, here’s a quick overview of what to expect:

  • EU residents: If you're already living in a European country as a citizen you're in luck and can apply for residency at your countries embassy via e-mail.

  • Visa requirements: Most non-EU citizens will need a visa to enter Spain. Common options for expats include work visas, student visas, and the highly sought-after non-lucrative visa.

  • NIE number: The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is a foreign identification number required for everything from opening a bank account to renting a property.

  • Healthcare registration: Spain provides excellent healthcare but you may need private insurance depending on your visa and residency.

The paperwork can feel overwhelming, but worry not! We've created a comprehensive visa guide with in-depth details to help you through this process!

FAQs about moving to Spain

1. Do I need to learn Spanish before I move?

It’s not mandatory, but learning the basics will greatly enhance your experience. Major cities like Madrid and Barcelona often have English-speaking locals but smaller towns may not. Signing up for Spanish classes ahead of your move or once you arrive is a smart idea.

2. How do I find a place to live?

You can start your search via real estate websites or local agents. Many expats rent temporary accommodation upon arrival and then explore long-term options once settled. Luckily we do have a little housing guide as well if you need a more in depth look!

3. How much does it cost to live in Spain?

Spain typically has a lower cost of living than many Western European countries. Housing costs vary depending on location, with cities like Madrid and Barcelona being more expensive compared to smaller towns. On average, a couple can comfortably live on €1,500–€2,000 a month outside of major urban centres. To look at it a little more in depth we also have an expense management guide for you to look through.

4. Can I bring my pet to Spain?

Yes, but there are specific requirements. Your pet will need a microchip, valid rabies vaccination, and an EU pet passport for cats, dogs and ferrets. For birds, reptiles and rodents the rules are a little less standardized but you will still need a health certificate and a proof of disease free status. Other than that you may bring up to 5 pets with you. Any more than that and it might be classified as a commercial move and may require additional paperwork.

5. Will I have access to healthcare?

If you're a European citizen, yes, the service will be free of charge. For non European citizens you might have to pay fees yourself if they come up or be referred to a private doctor. If you are living and working here however you usually will also be eligible to be signed up for the public healthcare so don't worry!

Your adventure awaits

Relocating to Spain is a thrilling adventure and proper preparation will make the transition as seamless as possible. By finding the right moving company, getting your paperwork in order, and following the checklist provided you’ll feel confident every step of the way.

Enjoy your stay in Spain!
